I’m happy to announce that the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village is the Weingart Center’s newest solution to interim housing for unsheltered residents of Los Angeles. Officially opened in May 2021, it serves as a stepping stone and guides individuals through housing, wellness and employment. We want to be proactive and provide solutions to end homelessness right away. The Hilda L. Solis Care First Village offers 60,500 square-feet of housing with kitchen space, dining area, laundry facilities, a dog park, courtyard, and administrative spaces with parking for staff and residents.

Weingart Center operates the facility and provides:

  • housing placement

  • three meals a day

  • case management services

  • mental health services

  • substance abuse support

  • pet-friendly environment

This structure was built with prefabricated modular units — 60 locally repurposed shipping containers and 20 custom-manufactured mobile trailers from Idaho.

What does this mean and why is this important?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many residents in Los Angeles were at risk of homelessness and those who were already unsheltered were especially at risk for infection. Typically, a construction project of this caliber takes two to three years to reach completion.

Using repurposed shipping containers allowed for the project to be designed, built, and receive final approvals in just four months; thus, allowing for everyone involved in the project to quickly deliver results during a time that necessitated extra housing for unsheltered people.

Initially, this space was supposed to be a new Men’s Central Jail. It will now serve as a safe space for residents in Los Angeles experiencing homelessness and to address their housing, mental and behavioral health needs.

The Hilda L. Solis Care First Village is located at 1060 North Vignes St., in the City of Los Angeles.

If you are at risk of experiencing homelessness or know someone who needs help, please contact the Weingart Center for assistance. The walk-in Access Center provides information and referral services, case advocacy, and a wide range of other social services in Downtown Los Angeles.
