Weingart Center Breaks Ground on New Skid Row Housing, Weingart Tower

Weingart Center President & CEO Senator Kevin Murray (Ret.) along with key Weingart Center leadership and elected officials broke ground on Weingart Tower, a permanent supportive housing development in the heart of Skid Row that will provide housing and supportive services for our most vulnerable neighbors.

The future 19-story high-rise located at 555-561 S Crocker Street will add 278 new furnished units to the residents of Skid Row. The high-rise development will feature extra amenities like a roof deck, pet relief area, and a fenced-in courtyard. The structure was designed with the residents and neighbors in mind.

Senator Murray (Ret.) said, “It’s designed such that — without knowing the people in it — you would never know that we were housing formerly homeless people.”

The 50 city blocks of sprawling tents, tarps and cardboard continues to be Los Angeles County’s largest encampment. The Weingart Tower offers a glimpse of what the future of Skid Row can hold: people off the streets and into homes that provide supportive services like job training, mental health services, medical treatment services, and case management.

According to the 2021 LABC Institute Homelessness Survey, 76% of voters support a right to shelter in California. There is no real solution to end homelessness if we’re not building homes for our vulnerable residents.

Murray adds, “I expect The City and County to continue to prioritize homelessness on behalf of their constituents whom polls show believe homelessness to be their top issue.”

The Weingart Center would like to thank everyone in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Weingart Tower, especially the following for presenting at the ceremony:

  • City of Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti

  • Council member, District 14, Kevin De Leon

  • Assembly member, CA District 53, Miguel Santiago

  • FHLBank San Francisco, President, Teresa Bryce Bazemore

  • State of California Business Consumer Services and Housing Agency, Undersecretary, Melinda Grant

  • Chelsea Investment Corporation, CFO, Jim Andersen

Weingart Tower is projected to open to residents in December 2023.
