L.A. Mayor Karen Bass showcases Hilda L. Solis Care First Village to fellow Black and African American mayors

When Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass recently invited Black and African-American mayors from across the United States to tour one of our Weingart housing locations, it was to spotlight the success that both the city and Weingart Center are having in helping to alleviate the crisis of homelessness.

In showing her guests the Hilda L. Solis Care First Village, one of our 15 interim and permanent supportive housing locations in Los Angeles, Mayor Bass was demonstrating a success story. As the San Diego Voice & Viewpoint newspaper noted, the Village is an “affordable, effective, and nimble solution to addressing the intersecting mental health and homelessness crises gripping cities around the country, and disproportionately impacting Black communities.”

I was delighted to showcase this permanent supportive housing development to the group of mayors alongside Los Angeles County supervisor Hilda Solis, after whom the complex is named.

I joined the tour to share information about our approach at Weingart Center to ending homelessness, and why we’re meeting with such success. Our philosophy flows from meeting our residents where they are, emotionally, psychologically, and with specific needs, in order to help them succeed.

Here’s more coverage of our visit by Mayor Bass and the visiting mayors. Read now.
